Park Central Mall (originally known as Park Central Shopping City), first opened in 1957 as an outdoor regional mall and was the brain child of brothers, Ralph and A.J. Burgbacher. The two purchased the 46-acre property – located at Central Avenue and Earll Drive – in the 1950’s, and it quickly became the hub of activity along Central Avenue. By the late 1990’s, much of the mall had been transformed into office buildings and data centers with a few popular restaurants included in the mix.
For the past decade, Park Central has struggled to regain its foothold – primarily due to the impact of the Great Recession, but also the owner’s unwillingness to commit the necessary funding to enhance and evolve the shopping center to attract and retain tenants.
Fast forward to October 2017 … Plaza Cos. and Holualoa Cos. announced they were buying 337,000 square feet of the once-iconic shopping center and transforming it from an outdated retail and office center to a dynamic new mixed-use development with the guidance and vision of local architect, richärd+bauer.
The new Park Central will combine its rich mid-century modern history with a new focus on technology, innovation and design, including all the most sought-after features in today’s office and retail market. Plans call for creative workspaces and offices, meeting spaces, art, shade, gathering places, onsite dining experiences, and an indoor/outdoor environment that is unlike any retail/office marketplace in the Valley.
With its easy access to major nearby freeways, two light rail stations, and close proximity to some of Phoenix’s most popular neighborhoods, housing, retail spaces and foodie hotspots, this is one development we are excited to see making a comeback. It will be a tremendous addition to the area while also paying tribute to its rich history in the community. The project is currently halfway through its year- long transformation and is set to be complete by Q4 2018.

An oldie but a goodie! Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a happy hour stop at Postino Central. Lest you forget, wine and pitchers of beer are just $5 every day until 5 p.m. And how can we not mention that Board & Bottle deal? Stop by on any Monday or Tuesday night after 8 p.m. and you can get a bottle of wine and a bruschetta board for just $20.
Really, we love this spot no matter the time of day, but happy hour is always a treat with freshly-shucked oysters and deals on popular dishes like voodoo fried rice, white fish ceviche and steak tartare. When it comes to cocktails, Buck & Rider does not disappoint and we always feel a little tinge of excitement when we see that the house Highballs and specialty cocktails are going for a killer deal – $7 and $8, respectively.
Nothing satisfies on a hot summer day quite like an ice-cold beer. When we get a hankering for some hops, we head to Huss at Uptown Plaza. Their freshly-crafted local beer has a flavor for every palate. At happy hour, you can find select pitchers at just $6, plus $1 off on wine and a special on their famous green chile pork, roast beef and caprese sliders.
This is another neighborhood spot that we’ll visit any chance we get. It’s a real treat at happy hour, too, with $4.50 for beers, wine and well cocktails, as well as $2 off their signature cocktails and appetizers. They also do a reverse happy hour from 9 to 11 p.m. and, on Mondays from 5 to 10 p.m., offer a bottle of Arizona Stronghold wine and an appetizer for just $20.
We’re glad (ha!) to report that The Gladly is another one of those Phoenix gems that believes in the all-day deal. This hotspot offers deals on drinks from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on food from 3 to 6 p.m. On the generous menu you’ll find roasted brussels sprouts, kimchi chicken wings and a raw bar with oysters, crudo and shrimp, plus cocktails on draft and featured wines.
Parents, we hate to tell you this, but the countdown to summer break from school is officially on. Have you figured out what you’re going to do to keep your kids busy in the sweltering heat? Not to worry – we’ve got you covered. Lucky for us Phoenicians, we live in a resort town where prices drop during the off-season, leaving plenty of space for us locals to have a great time.
If you haven’t been to River Ranch Water Park at Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak before, you should change that STAT. The four-acre sprawl features a half-mile lazy river, 130-foot waterslide, sparkling pools and an 18-hole putting course. There’s endless entertainment for kids, too, including underwater scavenger hunts, cannonball contests and slippery slide races. Saturday evenings bring a series of kid-favorite dive-in movies.
Fresh off a stunning renovation, The Phoenician is revamped and ready for summertime fun, particularly at the new Phoenician Pools. You have to check out the Kid Zone – there’s a suspension bridge, tree house with its own swaying bridge, plus sails and a helm for little ones to explore their inner pirate. And let’s not forget the splash pad – our kids love the spray-guns, falling buckets and shooting water spouts.
OK, let’s be honest…as a parent, is there anything better than a lazy river? One thing that’s absolutely on our summer to-do list is a poolside family-friendly cabana at Westin Kierland. Between the Kierland FlowRider surfing simulator, 110-foot waterslide and Adventure Pool, you’re going to need that lazy float down the river at the end of the day – trust us. And when you’re ready for a real break, sneak on over to the adults-only pool.
When it comes to seasonal celebrations, the motto at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess seems to be, “go big or go home.” This resort really pulls out all of the stops when it comes to family-friendly activities, so we’d be remiss to only mention their pools (but they are amazing…there’s SIX of them). The party is on all summer long with dive-in movies, Mermaid University, 4th of July Freedomfest and so much more.
Snow in Phoenix? In the summer? Yes, it’s actually happening at Hyatt Regency Scottsdale! With a 2.5-acre water playground, the resort is hosting the ultimate “chill out” fete for families with Virtual Snow Adventures, an icy “summit” for climbing, Polar Plunge and Après Beach, which, apparently, will be “an arctic getaway with crafty cocktails and games.” Sounds like they’ve got the parents in mind, too, which is a total win if you ask us!
